There are many different treatments with regard to migraines. Often doctors suggest trying a nonsteroidal potent drug (NSAID) first, such as aspirin or ibuprofen. NSAIDs have fewer side effects compared to migraine drugs. You may also try to reduce the number of migraines you experience by identifying and staying away from triggers that lead to migraine headaches.

If NSAIDs do not efficiently treat your migraines, your doctor may suggest prescription drugs that will treat or prevent migraine headaches:

Certain headache drugs known as triptans (such as Imitrex, Amerge, and Axert) are often used to treat a migraine as it is starting.

Preventive headache medicines such as propranolol (for instance, Inderal), divalproex (Depakote), or even tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline or even nortriptyline) are used to prevent migraine headaches in some people who get them frequently.

Nontraditional treatments, such as acupuncture therapy or the herb feverfew, may be added to drug treatment to help reduce head ache pain or the number of migraine headaches you experience, although more research is needed to confirm whether these types of alternative therapies actually function.

You may be able to reduce regular migraines by avoiding activates, such as certain foods, stress, plus changes in your daily program, although it is not clear exactly how or why these occasions lead to migraines. Some typical triggers of migraines consist of:

Consuming certain substances such as chocolate, monosodium glutamate (MSG), red wine, and caffeine.

    • Obtaining too much or not enough rest.
    • Fasting or skipping foods.
    • Changes in the weather or barometric pressure.
    • Stress or extreme emotions.
    • Strong odors or even cigarette smoke.
    • Bright lights or even reflected sunlight.

What is a Migraine?

A migraine is an extreme headache that researchers feel is related to the nerve pathways and brain chemicals in the brain. It was once believed to be only related to the blood vessels in the head, but now doctors see it as more of a neurological disorder. It has both genetic and environmental components in most cases.

Researchers and doctors are now finding that migraines aren’t simply a bad headache, but instead, they’re a collection of abnormal neurological symptoms. A migraine attack can last for several days in some cases and can be accompanied by visual disturbances, light, sound and smell sensitivities, tingling or numbness, vomiting, nausea and other symptoms. There are also many different kinds of migraines.

It can be important for people to differentiate between migraines and headaches because this can change the course of a how a person is treated.

A headache is usually defined as an unpleasant aching scenario, or you may feel pressure in your head. Headaches can be mild all the way up to severe, and they usually happen on both sides of the head, whereas a migraine may only happen on one.

The most common type of headache is a tension headache. A range of things usually causes tension headaches including strained muscles, stress, and anxiety. Fioricet is usually prescribed for the treatment of tension headaches, but people wonder if Fioricet might also be an effective treatment for migraines.

  1. Caffeine, drink coffee. Make sure you stay away from bright lights. When it gets bad, go to bed in a dark room and put a cold face cloth on your head.

  2. Depends on whether or not hormones are part of the problem. Do you get them once a month or all the time? You may want to check out the symptoms link at http://www.hufa.org to see if you have other symptoms of low blood sugar – or sugar imbalance of any sort – as that will definitely make migraines worse, if not cause them in the first place.

  3. Ive been taking Hydrocodone (vicodin) for a couple weeks, works wonders on migraines although only available by prescription, and HIGHLY addictive.

  4. You are lucky you can get away with ibuprofen for your migraines. Tylenol 3 used to work for me. Most meds seem to affect the stomach and liver though. Migraine specific meds such as imitrex, maxalt, emerge, etc. work really well. You take them at the first sign of a migraine.

  5. Headache is a pain in the head, scalp or
neck. Headaches can becaused by minor problems like
eyestrain, lack of coffee or moreserious reasons like
head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis andmeningitis.
Taking painkillers continuously can have harmful side
effects, so it is better to modify your lifestyle. More information

This is my headache doctor’s website. I am diagnosed with chronic migraine and migraine associated vertigo. Her treatment program has changed my life. I started by reading her book and went from there. Enjoy!
